Why This Chrome Update Can’t Wait
Google has just rolled out a critical security update for Chrome, addressing eight high-risk vulnerabilities affecting 3.5 billion users. While these aren’t zero-day exploits, the “High” severity rating means attackers could exploit them if left unpatched. This update targets core components like audio processing, 3D graphics, and font rendering—features you use daily without realizing their risks.
Understanding the High-Risk Vulnerabilities
Google’s latest patch resolves issues that could allow attackers to execute malicious code or bypass security protections. The vulnerabilities include:
- CVE-2026-4673: Heap buffer overflow in WebAudio
- CVE-2026-4674: Out-of-bounds read in CSS
- CVE-2026-4675: Heap buffer overflow in WebGL
- CVE-2026-4676: Use after free in Dawn (WebGPU)
- CVE-2026-4677: Out-of-bounds read in WebAudio
- CVE-2026-4678: Use after free in WebGPU
- CVE-2026-4679: Integer overflow in Fonts
- CVE-2026-4680: Use after free in FedCM
Google is withholding technical details to prevent exploitation until most users update. As Srinivas Sista noted in the Chrome Release blog, “Access to bug details may be restricted until a majority of users are patched.”
What These Bugs Mean for You
Many of these flaws involve memory corruption issues. For example, a heap buffer overflow in WebAudio could let attackers execute arbitrary code if a user visits a malicious site. Similarly, out-of-bounds reads in CSS might allow data leakage. These aren’t theoretical risks—attackers could exploit them within days of public disclosure.
How to Update Chrome Now
Chrome typically updates automatically, but manual intervention is safer for critical patches. Follow these steps to ensure you’re protected:
- Click the three dots in the top-right corner of Chrome.
- Hover over Help and select About Google Chrome.
- Chrome will check for updates and download them automatically.
- Click Relaunch to activate the security fixes.
Available versions: 146.0.7680.164/165 (Windows/Mac), 146.0.7680.164 (Linux), and 146.0.76380.164 (Android).
Why You Can’t Skip This Update
High-severity vulnerabilities often serve as entry points for phishing campaigns, ransomware, or data theft. For context, recent attacks on Microsoft 365 bypassed security codes by exploiting similar memory flaws. By patching now, you’re closing doors before attackers knock.
