Lamborghini’s Electric Conundrum
Lamborghini has been struggling to create an electric vehicle that embodies the drama and wow factor the brand is known for. The company has access to EV platforms through its parent company, Volkswagen Group, but it’s not a question of technology – it’s about customer demand.
Customer Preferences
According to Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann, customers in the luxury super sports segment are not interested in electric vehicles. People who pay six or seven figures for a supercar want the car to be exciting and dynamic, not restrained. As a result, Lamborghini has canceled its electric Lanzador SUV project.
A Shift to Plug-in Hybrids
Instead of pursuing full-EV development, Lamborghini will focus on producing more plug-in hybrids. By 2030, the entire Lamborghini lineup will consist of PHEVs. This move will help the company meet decarbonization requirements while still catering to customer preferences.
Market Readiness
Lamborghini has stated that while it’s technologically ready for an EV, market readiness within the luxury super sports segment is not yet aligned with this transition. The company will continue to monitor customer demand and refine its product strategy accordingly.
