I Took the 9,000-Pound Monster for a Spin – Here’s What Happened
Before heading on a trip to Tahoe last weekend, GM offered me the use of their 9,000-pound electric Escalade IQL for a week to test-drive. I’m not a professional car reviewer, but I do drive an electric car, so I thought, why not? I’d first glimpsed one last summer at a car show, and my immediate reaction was ‘Jesus, that’s enormous,’ followed by a surprising admiration for its design.
Initial Impressions: A Mixed Bag
When the car was dropped off at my house, I was taken aback by its sheer size. At 228.5 inches long and 94.1 inches wide, it made our own cars look like toys. My first apartment in San Francisco was smaller. Trying to drive it up my driveway was a little harrowing, too – it’s so big, and its hood is so high, that if you’re ascending a road at a certain slope, you can’t see whatever is directly in front of the car.
The Good: Performance and Features
Despite its enormous size, the Escalade IQL handles surprisingly well. It’s got a lot of power, and the electric motor provides smooth, quiet acceleration. The interior is also nicely appointed, with plenty of room for passengers and cargo. I was impressed by the advanced tech features, including a huge touchscreen display and a premium sound system.
The Bad: Practicality and Price
But let’s be real – this is a $130,000 vehicle, and it’s not exactly practical for everyday driving. It’s a gas-guzzler (or rather, an electricity-guzzler), and it’s not exactly easy to park or maneuver in tight spaces. And then there’s the price – it’s a lot of money for a vehicle, no matter how luxurious it is.
The Verdict: A Mixed Bag
So, would I recommend the Escalade IQL? It depends. If you’re looking for a luxurious, high-performance vehicle and you’ve got the budget to match, then maybe. But if you’re looking for something practical and affordable, then probably not. For me, I’m happy to have had the experience of driving it, but I’m also happy to give it back – it’s just not my cup of tea.
