Qualcomm Shows off First Wi-Fi 8 Chip
Qualcomm has unveiled its first Wi-Fi 8-capable chip, the FastConnect 8800, designed for the next generation of agentic AI internet. This new chip will offer double the performance of its predecessor, with support for Bluetooth 7.0, Ultra Wideband 802.15.4ab connectivity, and improved range from the router itself.
Wi-Fi 8 Performance Enhancements
Wi-Fi 8 will bring a number of performance enhancements, including a redesigned 4×4 radio configuration that will massively extend gigabit-speed range compared to previous router generations. Additionally, it will support next-gen 10Gbit internet connectivity.
Meanwhile, the FastConnect 8800 will also add more AI support, using AI agents to “enhance performance” and powering all the AI tasks using the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU, enabling agentic AI at the edge. For example, this new chip will appear in a whole class of Wi-Fi 8 routers and IoT devices later in 2026.
6G Rollout Plans
Looking beyond even this high-speed hardware, Qualcomm also aims to expand into next-generation mobile internet, with a global launch of 6G internet planned for sometime in 2029. Describing the network as “AI native”, Qualcomm is making it clear it’s ready for whatever comes next. Therefore, 6G standards should be finalized by 2028, so at that point, we’ll at least know its technical capabilities.
Finally, with the rollout of Wi-Fi 8 and 6G, we can expect significant improvements in internet connectivity and AI support. Additionally, here are some key points to consider:
- Wi-Fi 8 will offer double the performance of its predecessor.
- The FastConnect 8800 will support Bluetooth 7.0 and Ultra Wideband 802.15.4ab connectivity.
- 6G internet is planned for launch in 2029.
