Resident Evil Requiem: A Game of Two Halves
Resident Evil Requiem is the latest installment in the Resident Evil series, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The game tries to appeal to both new and old fans by starring a new character, Grace Ashcroft, and a series favorite, Leon Kennedy.
The Fresh Start
Initially, the game works well, with a fresh horror experience in the first half. Playing as Grace, with her limited arsenal, requires thoughtful gameplay. Meanwhile, brief sections playing as Leon provide a sense of relief. However, as the game progresses, it gets bogged down by Resident Evil’s past.
For example, the game’s setting in Raccoon City, a main location in the series, feels like a nod to longtime fans. Nevertheless, for new players, it may feel like more content to get through. Additionally, the game’s dual-character perspective, which started as a strength, becomes a weakness by the end.
Disappointment and Nostalgia
The game’s last main area, a high-tech lab, is more interesting to explore, especially when switching between Grace and Leon again. However, it is disappointing that Leon takes over as the main lead, fighting the final boss. Furthermore, the final boss itself is a letdown, being a giant plant-like zombie thing with obvious red boils to shoot.
In conclusion, Resident Evil Requiem’s reliance on Leon nostalgia is its downfall. Therefore, the game’s dual-character perspective, which started out as its biggest strength, becomes a weakness by the end. Finally, the game’s attempt to appeal to both new and old fans falls short.
